KITSCH - The Fantastic World of The House on the Rock
KITSCH - The Fantastic World of The House on the Rock & its sister book, KALEIDOSCOPE - Dreamscapes from The House on the Rock, is a twin book set featuring photography from “The King of All Roadside Attractions in the U.S.A.”.
The House on the Rock, built into a sandstone rock called Deer Shelter Rock, overlooks the lush valley of Spring Green, Wisconsin. This 13-room house, created by Alex Jordan Jr. with no formal training, features a Japanese-style interior with low-ceilings, wood paneling, stained-glass lights, and Asian art. Its main design feature is the 218-foot Infinity Room with 3,000 individual windows that extends over the rock. The house is reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose home studio is only 6 miles down the street.
More than just a house, The House on the Rock features grand collections of americana and worldly treasures curated into extravagant exhibition rooms. These include a complete recreation of Main Street, U.S.A. of the Victorian era called the Streets of Yesterday, a 200-foot-tall whale fighting a giant squid longer than the Statue of Liberty in Heritage of the Sea, a Tribute to Nostalgia, mega animatronic music rooms (Music of Yesterday) that play iconic music numbers, an immersive Steampunk room called the Organ Room, the world’s largest collection of dolls & doll houses, a Circus Room filled with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey memorabilia, and The World’s Largest Carousel. It is a kind of kitschy Disneyland in the most fantastic way possible.
The House on the Rock is an amazing, eclectic, sprawling, spectacular, and vast experience with more than two miles of exhibits. It is almost impossible to describe. These colorful books attempt to capture the mysterious dream world contained within this impressive marvel of the Midwest.
