California’s 21 Missions were created between 1769 and 1833 by the Franciscans of the Spanish Empire to convert Native Americans to the Catholic Church and Spanish way of life. Today, they still stand and reveal historic mission revival architecture and serve as a reminder of the difficult struggles Native Americans faced in the name of progress.
