The House on the Rock is one of the impressive marvels of the Midwest. This 13-room house was built into a massive sandstone rock with no master plans by Alex Jordan Jr. on land known as the UFO Capital of the World. It features a Japanese-style interior including the 218-foot Infinity Room with 3,000 individual windows overlooking the valley below. Beyond the house are grand showcases of ephemera inside extravagantly themed rooms: a kind of Kitschy Disneyland. These showcases include a complete recreation of Main Street, U.S.A. of the Victorian era called the Streets of Yesterday, tributes to the sea & nostalgia, giant animatronic music rooms that play iconic music numbers, an immersive Steampunk room called the Organ Room, the world’s largest collection of dolls & doll houses, a Circus Room, and The World’s Largest Carousel. The Carousel features 269 hand-crafted animals, none of them horses, and 20,000 lights illuminated among 182 chandeliers.

The House on the Rock is vast and almost impossible to describe. It was built near the 42nd parallel north, and is a place to find answers to life. The House was one of the first places I ever photographed, and is the birthplace of my career as a photographer. I put together my first book of images from this special place in 2009, and now again for my 42nd and 43rd books in 2023. Through double exposure photography & creative editing techniques, these photographs attempt to capture the mysterious dream world contained within. Like looking through a Kaleidoscope, these books are what my mind sees when I visit the magical place.
